Part 6: Smoke free policy and support

If your your workplace does not already have a smokefree policy, it would certainly be worthwhile introducing one now that the regulations cover the full scope of the country.

If nothing else, this may help to clear up some of the anomalies already outlined in this feature. A smokefree policy would also help to ensure that employees are aware of the new laws.

In addition, the policy should advise workers on what they need to do to comply with the new laws, whether this forms part of a separate verbal or written understanding, or is fully incorporated into existing health and safety policies.

The SmokeFree England website (www.smokefreeengland.co.uk) - set up by the Department of Health to help employers comply with the new regulations - includes a sample smokefree policy, along with further guidance and information on how to obtain smokefree signs.
